Appalachian State University

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Appalachian State University offers a challenging academic environment, energetic campus life and breathtaking location.

Appalachian combines the best attributes of a small liberal arts college with those of a large research university. Known for its value and affordability, Appalachian enrolls about 17,000 students and offers more than 140 undergraduate and graduate majors. Small classes and close interactions between faculty and students create a strong sense of community, which has become an Appalachian hallmark. Appalachian, located in Boone, N.C., is one of 16 universities in the University of North Carolina system.

Appalachian boasts diverse and vibrant arts programs that enrich the cultural and intellectual climate of the campus and region. Join us for an event— you can find one nearly every day of the year. The Arts at Appalachian include:

  • A variety of exhibition programs and workshops in the visual arts
  • A performing arts series featuring world-renowned visiting artists
  • Theatre productions, concerts and recitals by Appalachian’s highly acclaimed Hayes School of Music and Department of Theatre & Dance
  • Programs supporting student authors of poetry, fiction, plays, and creative non-fiction
  • Presentations and workshops by renowned authors
  • A popular craft enrichment series offering workshops for all ages
  • A nationally recognized summer arts festival
  • A student-run programming series featuring an eclectic mix of artists and entertainment

While the Appalachian State University football team garnered three NCAA Div I FCS national championships between 2005 and 2007 - and upset the University of Michigan in 2007 - Mountaineer athletics has more to brag about than just its gridiron success.

Appalachian fields 20 NCAA Division I varsity sports, 19 of which compete in the Southern Conference (SoCon). For an unprecedented eight times, the Mountaineers have earned in the same year both the SoCon Commissioner's and Germann cups, which recognize the league's top men's and women's all-sports programs.

University Recreation oversees all non-varsity sports activities on campus, including intramurals, club sports, outdoor programs, and fitness and informal recreation.
